National Pension System

A regulated, portable and market-linked retirement account.

Understand the product

What is NPS?

The National Pension System is regulated by PFRDA. Contributions are invested through registered pension funds across permitted asset classes. Returns are market-linked, not guaranteed, and withdrawal and exit rules apply to the Tier I pension account.

Official-source first

The guide agent answers from the curated regulator and market-institution material shown on this page. It does not promise returns or replace the applicable offer document, scheme rules or professional advice.

How it works

  1. 1Open an account and receive a permanent retirement account number (PRAN).
  2. 2Choose a pension fund and an Active Choice or Auto Choice allocation, subject to applicable limits.
  3. 3Contributions purchase units in the selected pension schemes and the NAV changes with underlying markets.
  4. 4At exit, withdrawal and annuity requirements depend on the subscriber category, corpus and rules then in force.

How to start with NPS

  1. 1Check eligibility and keep PAN, identity/address proof, bank details, mobile and email ready.
  2. 2Use the official NPS Trust eNPS route or a PFRDA-registered Point of Presence (PoP).
  3. 3Complete KYC, nominee and account details; select Tier I and optional Tier II where eligible.
  4. 4Choose the pension fund and investment option carefully, make the initial contribution and retain the PRAN acknowledgement.
