What is SGB?

Sovereign Gold Bonds are Government of India securities denominated in grams of gold and issued by RBI on the Government’s behalf. Existing series may trade on exchanges. Fresh subscription is possible only when an official tranche is announced; never assume a new issue is open without an RBI notification.

How it works

  1. 1A notified tranche specifies issue price, dates, eligibility, limits and receiving offices.
  2. 2The bond’s redemption value is linked to the notified gold-price methodology; an additional fixed interest is paid under the issue terms.
  3. 3The standard tenor has historically been eight years, with permitted premature redemption after the fifth year on specified interest-payment dates.
  4. 4Existing listed SGBs may be bought or sold on an exchange, where liquidity and market price can differ by series.

How to start with SGB

  1. 1First determine whether an official primary tranche is currently open by checking RBI notifications.
  2. 2For a fresh tranche, use only a channel named in its notification and complete KYC/payment under those terms.
  3. 3For an existing exchange-listed series, compare maturity, accrued/remaining interest, liquidity, price and tax implications.
  4. 4Verify the exact series and holding in demat/certificate records; retain transaction and nomination documentation.

Important checks

  • !There may be no fresh SGB tranche open; verify RBI announcements before attempting a primary subscription.
  • !Exchange liquidity can be limited and a series may trade at a premium or discount to its reference gold value.
  • !Interest, capital-gains and redemption tax treatment depends on the transaction and current law.
  • !Gold prices can fall, and exiting before maturity through the exchange exposes the holder to market price and liquidity.
